MINING TYPES
Surface Mining
Open-Pit Mining:
Extracting minerals from an open pit in the ground. Commonly used for
large ore bodies that are close to the surface.
Strip mining:
removing surface layers to access minerals. Often used for coal and lignite
deposits.
Quarrying:
extracting building materials like stone, sand, and gravel from quarries.
Underground Mining
Shaft Mining:
Vertical shafts are sunk to reach deep ore bodies, and horizontal tunnels
(drifts) are dug to extract the ore.
Room and Pillar Mining:
Creating a series of rooms while leaving pillars of ore to support the
mine roof. Used for coal, salt, and potash.
Longwall Mining::
This involves the full extraction of large blocks of minerals using
mechanized shearers. Common in coal mining.
Placer Mining:
Extracting valuable minerals from placer deposits (alluvial or glacial deposits) requires using
water to separate the minerals from the surrounding material. Gold panning is a form of
placer mining.
In-Situ Mining:
Extracting minerals without removing large amounts of overburden. Solutions are injected
into the ore body to dissolve the minerals, which are then pumped to the surface.
